Kaolin, also known as China Clay, is a soft white clay composed mainly of kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate (Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄). It is formed through the natural weathering of feldspar-rich rocks and is prized for its whiteness, fine particle size, chemical inertness, and excellent dispersion properties. These qualities make it one of the most important industrial minerals worldwide.
Application
- Ceramics & Porcelain: Provides whiteness, strength, plasticity for porcelain, sanitaryware, tiles, tableware; enables durability and thermal shock resistance.
- Paper Industry: Used as filler and coating pigment to boost brightness, smoothness, printability, and ink absorption while reducing costs.
- Paints & Coatings: Extender pigment improving opacity, gloss control, weather resistance, and durability; reduces reliance on costly pigments.
- Rubber & Plastics: Reinforcing filler enhancing tensile strength, wear resistance, dimensional stability, and surface finish; reduces shrinkage.
- Adhesives & Sealants: Enhances bonding strength, viscosity control, moisture resistance, and product stability.
- Cosmetics & Pharmaceuticals: Used for softness, absorbency, mild abrasiveness, and as a bulking agent in skincare and pharmaceutical products.
